Breckinridge Colorado: A Very Short Stop

Have you ever ventured somewhere just to revisit a great place to eat or drink? We have made a bit of a habit of it. We make a point to stop in Albuquerque just to visit a favorite New Mexican restaurant on road trips west. We are probably not the only ones that make our first stop in NOLA Café du Monde. And, we’ve even gone out of our way and flown to Madrid Spain just to have dinner at one of the oldest restaurants in the world.

So on this road trip we only had a night to stay somewhere in the Rockies, so we chose to revisit a favorite spot in Breckinridge: just for a margarita.

On our way from Colorado Springs to Breckinridge we stopped for a picnic lunch. We randomly found Mueller State Park, just on the other side of Pikes Peak.

We paid our entrance fee where we were told there were 4 picnic areas. We stopped at one called “Overlook,” hoping for a view. We were not disappointed.

Here’s the crazy part; we were completely alone. We did not see another person in the picnic area, or along our short hike, the entire time we were there.

As for our picnics on the road, they are pretty simple; fruit, cheese, lunch meat, some sort of salad that we make ahead of time and sometimes a wrap. Lots, and lots of water, as heading for the mountains really dehydrates these flat-lander-Texans.

The weather had finally cleared off and we were rewarded with beautiful views.

Next stop, Breckinridge. In our opinion it is one of the cutest mountain towns in Colorado.

Great shops, lots of restaurants and coffee shops, all surrounded with mountain views in the background.

Tons of people out walking, talking and just hanging out. Breck Park is right in the middle of town with a stream running through it. It’s pretty idyllic as a summer mountain town.

But the whole reason we stopped here….to have a great margarita at the Canteen Restaurant.

They are served in a real canteen, which is half the fun. Sitting outside you get a chance to watch the people in the town go by.

But of course, in our true luck, as soon as we got our margarita, the skies opened up. So, what did we do? We enjoyed our Canteen margarita outside under and umbrella, in the rain. Next stop, Park City!
