Sun, Sand and Savories: Our Getaway to Cabo San Lucas

We’ve been visiting Cabo San Lucas for almost 30 years. We’ve seen it grow like crazy during that time. Once, a sleepy marina, now there is a lot of activity in and around the town every day. Cabo advertises 350 days on sunshine a year. On this visit, hurricane Hillary had just passed so the skies were not fully clear yet.

Beyond the marina is the public beach. The beach itself is open to everyone. The water is very calm as it’s a protected bay. Along the beach there are beach clubs where chairs can be rented for the day and full service food and beverage. The hotels have beach chairs specifically for their guests as well.

Lots of people pick “their” place. The Hilton Los Cabos is our place in the Cabo area, located halfway between Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo. We’ve been here with friends, family and made new friends here. But mostly, we love to come here, chill out and enjoy the property.

The property itself is beautiful, having recently undergone a major renovation following a hurricane.

Every room has an ocean view along with a view of one of the pools and gorgeous property.

There are 3 pools, including one adults only pool. This pool is the main pool, our favorite.

One recommendation is to rent a cabana for a day if you’re looking for a treat. It’s a really fun experience where you have both inside seating in a large “bed” and chairs to lounge in the sun. The service is extra special as well!

Special Occasions

What a perfect day to sit in a cabana, a birthday! The cake was delicious and a gift from the hotel.

Happy cabana smiles!

If you’re really lucky, Roberto, the resident iguana will pay your cabana a visit. He’s harmless, usually comes around during lunchtime.

Beautiful ocean views from the pool. One more nice thing about this property is that the beach is one of the only swimmable beaches in this area.

You never have to leave the resort but if you do, visit San Jose del Cabo. There are great restaurants, shopping and generally more of a family feeling vs. the party scene in Cabo San Lucas.
One favorite restaurant is Los Tres Gallos, a traditional Mexican restaurant in town.

This is seating both in the courtyard and on the rooftop.

Caesar Salad

One of the specialties of Los Tres Gallos is the Caesar Salad made tableside. It is yummy!

Two homemade salsas arrive at the table along with the homemade chips. They are both delicious!
The empanadas are a great appetizer, one stuffed with chicken and the other pork.

For a main dish, Tampiquena is a great choice (and good to share)! It is a traditional beef dish served with two small chicken enchiladas and a chili relleno. It is so good!

One of the charms about Los Tres Gallos are the mariachis that serenade the tables every night. They take song requests and are very good! We were so glad to return to this great restaurant!

On Thursday nights most of the year there is an art walk in San Jose del Cabo. Somehow we’ve never made the walk. Every night, when the sun goes down and it cools off a bit, families come out to the plaza and vendors come out to sell treats. It’s such a feeling of community in this part of town with both local families and tourists out and about.

In this part of Mexico the sun comes up very early all year round. It’s up as early as 5:30 in the summer and as late as 7:00AM in December. It’s beautiful and worth an early rise to see.

This is the beach club at the Hilton. The chairs are free to hotel guests and the cabanas can be rented. Most of this year, this swimmable beach fills up during the day. But it’s so peaceful at sunrise.

In the days following the hurricane the waves could still be seen crashing up on the rocks. So pretty at sunrise.

Another day by the pool and beach made us very hungry! We opted for the beachside casual restaurant. In the 5 restaurants at the Hilton there is a good variety of food, including delicious sushi, which we chose for lunch.

The spicy tuna rolls are great as is the poke bowl. Great, healthy options for lunch.

But we also love a good burger and you can find one here too!

With all of this delicious food, thank goodness there is a great gym onsite too!

A peek inside the rooms, which are very modern and up to date. This room is on the La Pacifica side of the hotel (these photos are courtesy of booking.com as I always forget to take pictures of the room!) Trust me when I say the rooms are very well appointed!

On our last night, we visited another favorite restaurant, this one outside of San Jose del Cabo, Flora Farms. Find their website: HERE. It is not a traditional Mexican restaurant, nor is it a beach-view restaurant. It is a total experience, in a farm-to-table restaurant with lovely shops to visit on the property.

Start with a Beverage

There is a wine bar and coffee shop right near the entrance. Pick up a favorite beverage to start shopping.

Another thing to love about Flora Farms is that the shops feature local artisans and small businesses. There’s everything from apparel, to accessories to bath products and more to shop.

When you make a reservation for Flora Farms they advise you to arrive early so you can walk around. Beyond the shops there are just really beautiful gardens and spots to stop for a picture.

The dining area itself is so beautiful.

The Best Pork Chop in the World

The food is great here. Farm to table with lots of options. They even have a pizza oven right in the garden. But the dish to go for, in our opinion, is the pork chop. We’ve now had it twice and it’s the most flavorful, juiciest chop we’ve ever had. It comes in 3 sizes. This was the small size! Great for sharing.

We will be back to Flora Farms and would recommend this delicious experience to anyone that visits the Cabo area.

One last view from the pool to the beautiful beach and ocean. So grateful that we were able to return to the Hilton Los Cabos and hope to visit again!
